I first heard the rumors on Twitter yesterday and I cried because a rumor to that magnitude was enough to hurt me, then when his death was confirmed I cried even more because losing Michael Jackson is losing part of me.Michael Jackson was apart of my childhood along with many other fans on a global scale.
My very first concert was a Michael Jackson concert thanks to my Daddy, and to this day my Dad will still ask me, "Do you remember when I took you to that Michael Jackson concert and when he came out on stage you took off running down the aisle and security had to grab you?".
I remember living in Pacoima and every Saturday my Dad would get up early in the morning and wash his light blue Regal, and like a Daddy's girl I would be outside with him probably getting in his way but in my mind I was just helping him. When my Dad had his Regal, he had Michael Jackson's Thriller album on an 8-track and every body in my family knew back then, that if they wanted to see Kristin dance all they had to play was "Billie Jean" and it was a muthafuckin' wrap.
So washing my Dad's car, one day his Michael Jackson 8-track began to deteriorate because we listened to it so much. So if you know me, then you know I will roll until the wheels fall off. So my Dad and I are washing his car and Billie Jean came on, on the worn out 8-track and the song was playing in slow motion. Well THAT slow motion version was new to me and became my new version of Billie Jean. After washing the car I would be home with my Mom singing Billie Jean in slow motion and she was puzzled when I first started singing the song in my new slow motion version because she didn't understand why I was doing that, then my Dad told her the 8-track was giving out while Billie Jean was playing and that really tickled her and my Mom still talks about that to this day.
I can talk about Michael Jackson and his achievements as an artist and what he means to music and HOW HE CHANGED MUSIC and how he was the first Black artist to be featured on MTV, that's right, IF IT WASN'T FOR MICHAEL JACKSON THERE WOULD BE NO MTV. I have so much to say about him and I hope to enlighten and stray people away from this so-called "Jacko" image that attacked him later in his career.
I plan to write every day next week about his achievements as a music artist because he is bigger than Elvis Presley, he is bigger than Beyonce, he influenced Justin Timberlake, and Usher, and Chris Brown, and I will get into all that next week. There is soooo much to know about this man and his fight for humanity and I am really sadden by his death. He will forever live on in spirit and I thank him for his inspiration. Today I leave you will his Billie Jean video.

The 87 Stick Up Kids hit the internet and the world with their first EP release "OUT 4 FAME" and this is what a favorite journalist/blogger/ear to the ground had to say -
"Besides establishing The 87 Stick Up Kids as one of the illest acts on the new school West Coast scene, ‘Out 4 Fame’ portrays a group that mxes the best elements of artists like Time Machine and The Cool Kids on a Cali tip.
With 808 kicks drums, electro claps, classic breakbeats, synthesizers, vocoders and irreverent lyrics that pay lip service to Hip-Hop's Golden Age and True-School eras, ‘Out 4 Fame’ is easily one of 2009's strongest Hip-Hop records.."

We celebrated this milestone in SK 87 history with a release party at their LA stomping grounds Dance Right at La Cita. Along with collaborators Hollyrock and DJ Mike B we rang in this new era.

Thank you to everyone who was able to make it out to Hancock Park this Saturday. We raised about $600 in monetary donations and had five heavy ass boxes of canned good going to the Downtown Los Angeles Food Bank. The event was such a success that we may end up with more charity events before the year is out.
Here are two performances from Saturday. Butterscotch with her flyyy lady dopeness performance and another performance clip from DKLA, the artist that started to non-profit organization ZU CREW NATION.

KARRIEM IS A LEGEND!
I was so starstruck back in 2004 when I first met Karriem on Common's "Electric Circus" Tour...He was part of Common's band at the time...I drove some odd miles to House of Blues Anaheim for the show. I remembered Talib Kweli & KanYe West opening up...I walked up to Karriem after the show and thanked him for making Electric Circus dope! I can't believe that was 5 years ago.

I can only digitally express so much joy that I have and anticipation for The Spliff x Zu Crew can food drive. Being in The Spliff Alumni, we have watched it become the giant that it is today and feel that it is our responsibility to consistently give you the best talent that you may or may not have seen or heard before.
I will be sharing my favorite performances/stories through out the week in order to commemorate the food drive.
This video is of Inglewood's own Three-One-Zero for the March 7th Spliff.

This was one of Chuck's first performances and he was really excited about it, enough to make this own recap video that you see here. I also enjoyed the band Ars Poetria, they performed at the begging of the Spliff and it was one of those additions that Val added to "mix up" the talent. Anywho here's the video.

A Shot of Belvi to the Head... Weekly. (Its been a long time... pt. 2)
6/13/2009 Author: Brandon "Belvi" Banks
Okay so last I left off with a multitude of topics I could possibly drown you in and first on that list was this Charles Hamilton fella. Since the stories are becoming more sordid and ridiculous on the daily I figure the floor is free for me to drop my 2 cents into the collection plate. Long story short my experience is this: his ex and my good friend, Briana Latrise, calls me up raving about the bounty of people who are raving about my verse on Check 1, 2 with Verbs and Ty(myyyyyyy niggas). One of those people happened be Charles Hamilton who happened to be in the car as we talked, and she happened to put him on the phone in which he proceeded to tell me I "sound like and ill ass nigga from '96, dead ass." A typical industry conversation occurred where he asked me what my plans were, I told my quest to find a good studio and record my album, he invited me to a studio he had no connect to and never saw it through; much to my delight because I'm actually not fond of his rap skills to begin with (peer to peer rule number 3: if you give somebody praise for their work and they don't respond in kind, its one of two things: they don't know you or don't feel the same). The end. Now as for his ex and the "civil assault", he had it coming. Don't look for me to put any of her personal life out on the streets, besides that's her life tell anyway. All I know is that he deserved every knuckle that turned his jaw. There are just certain things you don't do to a stand-up woman. And involving the rest of this shit. This beat stealing and false executive production credit.. eh, let the chips fall where they may. If some wild niggas from the inner city slums of the "De-twa" hem him up like a seamstress, let the chips fall where they may. If this producer fella, who's, no disrespect, name eludes me right now, calls Mr. Hamilton out and thusly sabotages his career, let the chips fall where they may. What many don't know about Charles Hamilton is, though he is not diagnosed with any mental illness, this is not the case of a "foul nigga" but rather an emotionally and mentally retarded young man in the strictest sense of the word. Retarded as in regressed or stunted growth. He's more a child in a man's body. I don't say that in his defense but more to illustrate exactly what we're dealing with here. Any "man" who harbors an odd obsession of a video game character or passes off their religious wearing of pink as some sort of homage to women's vaginas as the birthplace of civilization is not only crazy but lying through their teeth and a complete narcissist. Narcissism is an obvious trait in children where typically they have to be taught to share and be selfless. And to remove bias, Dilla's not my favorite producer of all time or even the one I consider the best, but his skill and influence are unquestionable should be respected at the utmost level. If for nothing more than a respect for the dead. Now I'll use production and... death, I guess, to segue into the music and movies portion of this "catch up." I'll start with a group that my bro, Dj Val the Vandle hipped me to. Wait, real quick, this saying bro thing is funny to me. I've been saying bro for forever but for me it came from a short list of individuals I call "my bro"... as in my brothers. Even further than that it also was something I knew of only bloods saying. Now I can't go anywhere without someone using it as a greeting. Anyway, the groups name is Rah Band and they're what I call "the Neptunes before the Neptunes." They're a late 70's, early 80's, jazz, funk, disco, fusion group and are surprisingly ahead of their time. Here's on of their signature songs Messages From The Stars. To really see why I call them "the Neptunes before the Neptunes" check for a song called Float.

Now the film is a rather long one by a rather prominent actor. The movie's full title is "The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford" starring Brad Pitt and Casey Affleck. I'm an admitted movie buff so it's not uncommon of me to be up at 5 in the morning scrolling through HBO or Showtime ondemand looking for new movies. When I stumbled upon this movie last year, I did expect it to be a regular ole' western. Almost completely to the contrary it was neither regular or old. It was released as recent as 2007 and is apart of a long string of new westerns that use interpersonal script writing and better movie making techniques to tell the same story a new way. "Seven" made me a fan of Brad Pitt, "Gone Baby Gone" made me a fan of Casey Affleck (thought I've known about him since "Good Will Hunting") and this being the fourth time they've paired up, including the Ocean's Eleven series (some of my personal favorites), the haven't lost a step. Do yourself a favor and see this movie, homes.

A Shot of Belvi to the Head... Weekly. (Its been a long time...)
6/11/2009 Author: Brandon "Belvi" Banks
Its been wayyyyyyyy tooooo long. I might have to title these posts "A Shot of Belvi to the Head... Yearly." Now that I'm finally posting something I'm really not sure what to talk about. I could talk about how Charles Hamilton seems to be affecting everybody's life in one way or another, defend his ex-girlfriend (close personal friend of mine) and tell my Charles Hamilton story. I could talk about this ridiculous "Closets and Elephants" series and how they supposedly are exposing industry homosexuals, most notably Kanye West. I could talk about the importance of the "D.O.A." track from Jay-z and how it relates to the decay of interesting music. I could talk about up and coming artists who aren't living or haven't sniffed a wiff of the shit they've spoken (don't ask, don't tell). Hmm.. so many lanes only one vehicle. I guess I'll stave all that off for later and just drop some new this or new that to make up for lost time. Lets start with the art, lets start with Nathan Sawaya.

Oh yeah... these are Legos! Further proving that there are no limits to art. Now for the fashion. Let's go with Live Mechanics and I.K.W.T. [(In Kicks We Trust) see inkickswetrust.blogspot.com for more].

Live Mechanics have without question mastered the art of the up-collar. Now of course they have more than thick leather coats with up-collars and spandex wrists/waists. But these are great illustrations of some of their best work.

Okay for all those that have no get up and go, no drive, no focus... be shamed. These shirts, these designs, that logo, all designed by a kid not yet out of high school. That's right. The last school he became an alum of was a middle school where he probably had to wear a uniform. Now he plans on dressing the world.
I'll leave it at this for now. The plan, tomorrow, music and movies. But for now... LAKERS!!!!!!!!

Can you imagine how this little boy felt when he realized that President Obama's hair felt...just like his? What an inspiration this experience must have been. To be so young and realize the President is just like you. Look at the expression in his eyes, I can just imagine what was going through his free little mind.
