February has become the annual month when music fans around the world celebrate the life and music of the late great James Yancey (J Dilla) because his birth and his untimely death both happened in Feb (February 7, 1974 – February 10, 2006).
As a side story, I interviewed Pharrell of The Neptunes/N*E*R*D* in 2005. In that interview, Pharrell was naming different producers, and when Dilla's name came up, he called Dilla 'The Beat King of All Time'. For some one like Pharrell to say that at the height of his commercial success resonated with me; the one who everyone in mainstream music THOUGHT was the best, was paying homage to someone that pop culture barely knew.

Simply put. Dilla is the Beat King of All Time
